The season has started off strong with warm weather and this has provided us with local produce earlier than expected. We have Connecticut Grown: CORN, LETTUCE, TOMATOES, GREEN BEANS, CUCUMBERS, ZUCCHINI AND YELLOW SQUASH. These veggies are fresh and flavorful coming in daily from our local growers.
Also beat the heat with our new SMOOTHIE and JUICE STATION. Nothing is more refreshing than an ice cold smoothie made with milk or Dairy Free with local apple juice or homemade watermelon juice. We don’t add any sugar to our smoothies (maybe a little local honey if you ask nicely) .Our Vegetable juices are made with local produce and organic produce and are made to order chock full of vitamins and nutrients.
Our staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The store has a new air conditioner so you can shop in comfort even on the hottest days and we have complimentary carry out service to take your bags to the car.
CORN Tips
Here are a couple of tips for keeping your corn:
1. Keep your corn in its husk until ready to cook. The flavor and tenderness will be affected if this is removed and the corn is not eaten immediately. The husk also protects the tender kernels in transit.
2. Cook it in its husk. The husk provides flavor and is natures steam pouch. Toss your corn on the grill and roast it while rotating until the corn is a rich brown (about 10 minutes) and set let rest for 10 minutes before husking. The husk will come off easily and pull the silk off with it.
If it is cool outside roast corn in the husk in the oven. 325ºF in a convection oven for 15 minutes then let stand for 10 minutes before serving
3. The husk can insulate cooked corn for up to 45 minutes. Don’t husk it until ready to serve.
Here a recipe for our Fresh Local Corn:
Roast Corn with Maple Butter
6 ears of Grilled corn (prepare as previously described)
In a sauce pan over low heat add:
4 tbs unsalted butter
1 tbs maple syrup
